Anneliese Michel. West Germany. In 1976, a young woman was said to be possessed by six evil spirits and after doctors failed to help her, the family turned to Catholic priests. Anneliese was exhibiting odd behavior such as eating bugs off the floor and seeing strange visions and hearing strange voices. Two priests would become involved and investigated the situation. Exorcism rites were approved and then performed over a period of nine months before Anneliese died. But was she possessed? The story The Exorcist, released in novel form in 1971 and as a film two years later, may have had an impact on this bizarre case. But is this a case of art imitating life or life imitating art?
