Remains described as burned and dismembered have been discovered by a family searching for their missing loved one.
18-year-old Markavious “Mark” Rumph Jr., known to friends and family as “Lil’ Mark,” had plans to attend a welding school in Eufaula in Barbour County, Alabama, and had recently earned his GED.
Eufaula, where the teenager resided, is the largest city in Barbour County, Alabama, and has a population of just under 13,000.
Mark’s family described him as outgoing and the life of the party.
“He was gonna make you laugh,” they said.
Hinting that life may not always have been smooth for Mark, a family member, who remained unnamed, later told ABC9:
“Everybody makes mistakes but God gives you enough time to change it, and he did that. That’s why he graduated and did everything that he did.”
On the night of May 6, 2026, Mark climbed into a black Nissan at an Alabama gas station and was never seen alive again.
When Mark did not return home to his grandmother’s house in Eufaula that night, his family became concerned and reported him missing.
On May 9, the Eufaula Police Department published a statement to social media that read:
“MISSING Markavious Rumph, 18, last seen around 7:30 pm, 6 May 2026 at the Beeline #3 gas station (131/431). Unknown clothing, was last seen getting into a black Nissan.”
The victim’s family would later say they did not feel police treated the disappearance with the urgency they expected, so the family organised a search party of their own.
Search efforts began across Barbour County and included rural roads, wooded areas and isolated properties throughout the region.
Mark’s mother, Yolanda Wynn, later said:
“I looked for five days for my son, with no help from the Eufaula Police Department.”
“Me and my family in the rain on Mother’s Day, I walked through those woods.”
During the search, family members said they began hearing disturbing rumours circulating in the community about what may have happened to Mark.
Then, on May 12, 2026, they reported discovering what they described as burnt and dismembered human remains on White Oak Church Road.
That same day, the Eufaula Police Department posted an update to social media confirming the discovery of human remains.
In successive updates, investigators reported that a vehicle concealed behind a residence had been seized on May 8 and was being processed as evidence.
Investigators also reportedly discovered what appeared to be traces of blood, according to local media reports, although this has not been officially confirmed. A shovel was also found in the vicinity. Two days later, a rag with what appeared to be blood on it was recovered. On May 12, further remains were located with the assistance of cadaver dogs. The discovery has not officially been linked but those following the case online speculate it is connected to the missing teen.
The victim’s father, Marcus Rumph, said of the discovery:
“They basically burned my baby, shot my baby, burned him up and chopped him up.”
“I’m dealing with it the best I can right now.”
Hinting that life may not have always been smooth for Mark, a family member, who remained unnamed, later told ABC9:
“Everybody makes mistakes but God gives you enough time to change it, and he did that. That’s why he graduated and did everything that he did.”
Search party member Eliza Franklin later described the scene:
“It wasn’t even a body there, it wasn’t even a body to be found. Literally when you looked at it, they had dismembered this young man, set his body on fire.”
“If you think about the worst horror movie you’ve ever seen, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that’s what this road is.”
The area where the remains were discovered is rural and isolated, surrounded by dense woodland and sparsely scattered homes along sprawling country roads.
At the time of writing, the official cause of death has not been publicly released.
Although reports stated the remains were difficult to identify because of their condition, Mark’s family said they were certain the remains belonged to him.
According to ABC9, when questioned about the identity of the remains, police said they were “at a standstill” while awaiting DNA confirmation and positive identification, adding:
“This is not NCIS or CSI on T.V.”
Police told WTVM they were taking steps to ensure all available evidence had been collected before issuing warrants for any suspects.
Outlets reported that the individual Mark entered the vehicle with on the night he disappeared was believed to be an acquaintance, although no suspects have been publicly identified.
The family have stated they may know who is responsible, but because the investigation is ongoing, they do not want to publicly name anyone.
Danny Christ with the Eufaula Police Department reportedly told Fox10 News:
“We do have suspects, and my message to them is if you did this or had anything to do with it, this sick horrific crime, we’re coming for you. We’re going to find you.”
The investigation remains active and ongoing and, at the time of writing, no arrests or charges have been made in Markavious Rumph Jr.’s death. Authorities have stated they believe progress is being made in the case.
