Around midday, on 14 December 2023, Daniel Krug, 43, of Broomfield, Colorado, placed a call to police, stating he was concerned about his wife, Kristil Krug, 43, after he was unable to locate or contact her following a series of harassing texts and emails she had been receiving.
Police arrived at the couple's residence on the 3100 block of Promontory Loop to perform a welfare check, where they soon located Kristil Krug's body in the garage with an obvious wound to the right side of her head. It appeared she may have been hit over the head as well as stabbed in the chest.
Two months earlier, on Halloween of October 2023, after receiving what she believed to be unwanted messages from an ex-boyfriend she had dated for less than a year in 2000, Kristil filed a report with police.
According to media outlets, following the 2000 breakup, Kristil's ex had sent messages propositioning her for sex, as well as messages insulting her.
The messages eventually stopped when Kristil ignored them and did not reply, so at the time she saw no need to report the ex to police.
Then, unexpectedly, on 2 October 2023, Kristil received a text from who she believed to be the same ex-boyfriend that now lived in Utah, asking her to meet up for sex.
She ignored the message, however, the following day on 3 October, another message was sent, this time of an insulting nature, goading her to take her own life.
Kristil ignored the messages, but couldn’t ignore the disturbing email that would land in her inbox, threatening her husbands life. The email also contained a photo of Daniel Krug outside his place of work.
Kristil promptly filed a police report on October 31, 2023.
Between the time of the report and her death a few weeks later in December, Kristil received several more emails and text messages of a stalking and harassing nature. One implied the sender of the messages had watched her enter a dentist’s office for an appointment in early November and included a picture of her car, and another taunted her about her expired license plate tags.
The messages continued to be threatening towards her husband, saying Daniel was undeserving of Kristil, and that he was a "loser" who "couldn't satisfy her."
"U belong with me," one message read, "give me the signal and he won’t come home," said another, adding that the sender was able to "walk right into" Daniel Krug's place of work.
The content of the messages was so threatening that officers with the Glendale police were sent to check on Daniel at his office. Detectives from Broomfield also performed a welfare check on Kristil to confirm she was safe.
The investigation into Kristil’s murder on December 14, 2025, revealed that the emails and messages had not come from the ex-boyfriend Kristil had broken up with over two decades ago- but her own husband, Daniel Krug.
When tracing the I.P. address associated with the emails and messages, it led police right back to the public Wi-Fi network at Daniel Krug's place of work.
Police also discovered that at the time of Kristil’s death, all of the cameras she had installed at the property had been turned off, a factor Daniel could not explain. Only she and Daniel had the codes to the cameras, and it didn’t make sense to police that she would turn them off.
Police then contacted the victim’s ex-boyfriend, who currently resides in Utah, to confirm where he was at the time of Kristil’s murder.
They confirmed that he had not taken any flights, nor had he driven his own vehicle to Colorado. His devices did not show that he had contacted Kristil.
When interviewed by police, relatives revealed that cracks in Daniel and Kristil's marriage had begun to show in recent times. The pair had been wed in 2007.
An affidavit stated that Krug’s stepmother said there was marital problems, and that Kristil had been documenting injuries one of the children had on their arms to use in a custody case following a looming divorce. The couple had three children together, two girls, and one boy, 14, 11, and 8.
Daniel Krug was taken into custody on December 16, 2024. He claimed he did not have any involvement in the murder of his wife.
He has been charged by the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office with first-degree murder, as well as two counts of stalking and criminal impersonation.
His trial is set to begin this month.
Kristil was born November 24th, 1980, in Boulder, Colorado. She loved the performing arts and modern dance, as well as the sciences.
She was described by family as passionate, beautiful, successful, driven, and considerate.
According to her obituary:
“Recognizing her academic brilliance, she was awarded an Academic Scholarship to the prestigious Colorado School of Mines, where she initially pursued her passion for biochemical engineering. Later, she transferred to the University of Colorado (Boulder), where she continued to excel, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemical Engineering.”
“Kristil's academic achievements opened doors to a fulfilling career in the field of technology and innovation.”
Daniel Krug’s trial is set to begin as early as this week (at the time of writing.)
