Ohio Music Pastor and Former American Idol Contestant Caleb Flynn Found Guilty of Wife’s Murder

In 2013, worship pastor Caleb Carl Flynn appeared as a contestant on the 12th season of American Idol. Although he failed to progress any further than the early eliminations, he featured in interview segments where he talked positively about his wife, Ashley Flynn, saying she was the one who nudged him to audition for the show. The pair had met at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, and married in 2010. They went on to have two daughters together.

In an American Idol segment, Caleb said:  “I’m a normal person.”  When asked who inspired him he added:  “I love the Lord,” and “I love my wife more than anything, she is very, very pretty. I love her.”

Ashley Flynn graduated from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, in 2010 and went on to work as a substitute teacher and seventh-grade volleyball coach. She volunteered at the church she attended regularly, the Christian Life Center, and was a teacher with LifeWise Academy, a Christian educational program in Ohio. She was loved by those around her, who described her as caring, kind and a “shining light of joy.”

Caleb Flynn also graduated from Lee University with a degree in pastoral and music ministry and went on to work as a worship arts pastor. In late 2021, Caleb began working as the vice president of sales for Ashley’s family’s business. A few months earlier, he had purchased a three-bedroom home for the family.

On February 16, 2026, at 2:31 a.m., a 911 emergency dispatcher received a call from the Flynn residence on Cunningham Court in Tipp City, Ohio, reporting a shooting. A panicked and inconsolable Caleb Flynn claimed that an unknown assailant had broken into his home and shot his wife in the head as she lay in bed. He added that he had found the door to the garage open.

The door handle and lock were reported to be damaged. Prosecutors later argued that the apparent break-in had been staged, rather than being the work of an unknown intruder.

Caleb claimed that he had a cough that night and that Ashley had asked him to sleep on the sofa. He later said he had awoken and gone into his daughters’ room and heard gunshots. When asked what he did next he said he froze and didn’t leave the room immediately, estimating that it could have been up to five minutes before he called 911.

Police responded to the scene within ten minutes of the call and found Ashley dead in the master bedroom of the home. The children were asleep in their beds.

The door to the garage, that Caleb Flynn had told the dispatcher he had found open, was the pedestrian door, which had reportedly been previously blocked by a refrigerator.

Caleb’s vehicle, a Ford pickup truck, was parked in the garage, and he claimed his 9mm pistol, which he kept inside the vehicle’s center console, was missing. Two 9mm casings were recovered near the foot of the bed where Ashley was found.

Three days after the murder, Caleb Flynn was arrested and charged with one count of murder, as well as two counts of felonious assault and two counts of tampering with evidence. He was detained, and his bond was set at $2 million.

According to reports, Ashley had discovered inappropriate messages between her husband and an intern at their church named Alleigha Botner. Ashley wanted to meet the woman Caleb had been having an affair with and attempted to do so in 2025, but Botner avoided her.

According to testimony at trial, Caleb met Botner, 20 at the time, when she was an intern at the Christian Life Center in 2022. She was being trained by Caleb as a worship leader and shadowed him, often joining him on stage at the church where they performed on stage together.

Initially, when questioned by police about her involvement with Caleb Flynn, Botner denied having a romantic relationship with him. She later admitted to knowing him in a romantic capacity after more than 100,000 messages between them were recovered from Caleb’s device.

They also had small matching lightning bolt tattoos. Caleb concealed his in his armpit to hide it from his wife. The lightning bolt represented Harry Potter, which they were both fans of.

The communication also revealed a much darker side of Caleb Flynn, including messages in which he talked about how much he hated Ashley and her family, claiming that he only remained married to her for the children’s sake. The messages became darker as time went on, and in 2025 he wrote: “I just want her dead and gone.”

Another disturbing message read: “I was up until 4am last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail.”

During testimony, Botner also described a conversation in which she wrote, “I want to kill her Caleb,” and Flynn allegedly replied, “That makes two of us.” Botner said she was not serious about wanting Ashley killed.

According to Botner, the affair lasted more than a year. The messages between the pair became crucial to the investigation, specifically those exchanged between early 2025 and 2026 about Caleb leaving his wife.

Caleb stated that if he divorced Ashley, he would be giving up the $250,000 annual salary he earned working for her family’s company, his home and his children. He added that he would be shamed publicly and might have to leave the church as a result.

According to Botner, she told Caleb Flynn that he had to leave his wife by January 11, 2026.

Ashley would be found murdered the following month.

Caleb claimed that Ashley had cheated on him two years earlier, although investigators reportedly found no evidence to support this claim.

On March 18, 2026, a grand jury indicted Flynn on 11 counts, including aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence and two misdemeanor counts relating to intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case. His bond was subsequently increased to $3.5 million.

Caleb Flynn denied killing his wife and pleaded not guilty before trial. The trial began on September 18, 2026, with the prosecution accusing Flynn of murdering his wife and staging the scene to resemble a burglary. They highlighted his affair and the messages exchanged between him and Botner. The defense argued that although Caleb was having an affair, it did not make him a murderer.

Investigators presented their evidence, including the damage to the door, which prosecutors argued was consistent with a staged break-in, as well as the missing murder weapon. The defence challenged the prosecution’s interpretation of the evidence.

Alleigha Botner testified about her relationship with Flynn and the messages they exchanged, including conversations in which they discussed Ashley.

Prosecutors read a message allegedly sent by Caleb on February 15, 2026, which stated: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”

On September 29, 2026, after approximately two hours and ten minutes of deliberation, the jury found Caleb Flynn guilty.

On October 5, 2026, Flynn was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He continued to deny murdering Ashley, and according to reports, intends to appeal.
