On December 31, 2024, police performing a welfare check at a home near the 18900 block of Eastwood Avenue East in Puyallup, WA, made a horrifying discovery.
The home belonged to husband and wife William Vosler, 68, and Eileen Vosler, 66, who lived there with their son , Shane Vosler, 33, and his live-in girlfriend Sue Bin Lee, 34.
Neighbours often saw William out on his driveway working on his vehicles, but they hadn't seen him since July 2024.
They became concerned when months went by with no interaction with or even sightings of William and Eilene. Four separate calls for welfare checks pertaining to the couple were made to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, after neighbours noticed one of Williams cars being towed from the home on December 23, 2024.
One of these welfare request was called in by an online friend of one of William and Eileen’s sons. The individual, who resides in Florida, told a deputy that he was concerned after seeing a post made to social media by Lee the second week of November 2024, in which she allegedly wrote that she and Shane Vosler were considering suicide.
When officers responded to the scene on this occasion they checked the house and saw no indication of forced entry. They left, however, returned a couple of times over the next few days unable to enter the home.
After being unable to contact their parents, William and Eileen’s sons prised the air conditioning unit off the second floor of the residence and forced their way into the home, where they were hit by a foul odour and quickly discovered Sue Bin Lee dead on a bed in a room on the second floor of the northeast side of the residence.
Not long after, they located the body of Shane in a locked master bathroom, also on the second floor. He had a gunshot wound to the head and a .45 calibre handgun was found nearby. There was also a bullet hole through the bathroom door.
The house was described as being very messy inside.
When officers searched the home for a second time they noticed two notes on the leaking kitchen refrigerator, as well as a freezer in the garage that read:
“Time of Death July 24th 5:45 a.m.”
“Time of death July 24th 3:00 p.m.”
Inside the freezer they found the bodies of William Vosler and Eileen Vosler, the notes are presumed to be the time of deaths for each.
William had died due to blunt force trauma and a stab wound to the chest.
Eileen died from multiple stab wounds across the neck and chest.
It appeared their son Shane, and his girlfriend, had been living in the home with the bodies for several months.
Autopsy later revealed that both Shane Vosler and Sue Bin Lee died from gunshot wounds to the head, with Shane’s manner of death ruled as a suicide.
According to Deputy Carly Cappetto Shane is a suspect in his parents murders, however, Lee's role has not yet been determined.
She said: "We’re not looking for any suspects at this time. We don’t have anybody outstanding or any person of interest that we’re looking for, so we do feel the scene is contained to this home."
Although neighbours noticed that there was a distinct lack of activity in the Vosler's driveway, the couples other sons said it was not unusual that they didn't hear from their parents around the holidays. One son said the most suspicious aspect was one of their fathers vehicles being towed from the driveway, sparking concern. William loved his cars, and dedicated a lot of time to working on them.
The family was described as being inactive in the community, and not close with immediate family members, so it took some time before their absence was noticed.
With Shane being the number one suspect in the homicides, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said with no one to charge, and no idea of the motive behind the slayings, they are closing the case.
It has been speculated by those following the case that Shane Vosler may have killed his parents and lived with their bodies for several months before committing suicide together with his girlfriend, although Lee's manner of death is officially undetermined as it was difficult to determine if it was suicide or homicide due to the angle of the bullet.
Evidence also indicated that Lee had been deceased for a longer period of time compared to Shane Vosler who died most recently by his own hand. The period of time between the deaths of Shane and his girlfriend have not been reported.
Under a reddit thread about the tragic case, commenters who say the have connections to the users (unconfirmed) described the family as quite isolated, keeping to themselves, and quite religious.
One user wrote: (unconfirmed)
“I personally knew the family….They were very religious, and the mom seemed like she was a helicopter parent. She would drive him to college every day in Seattle. She was nice but you got a weird vibe from their relationship. I wouldn't be surprised if the girlfriend or the mother possibly made him do it.”
Officially, Deputy Carly Cappetto concluded: “We’re going to be closing this case because we don’t have anyone to charge," adding: “The medical examiner’s report is a key piece of evidence and matched up to what we were leaning towards.”
